New Video and a Slink Down Memory Lane with Slinky on National Slinky Day!

Happy National Slinky Day to all of you slinky lovers out there! Alex Toys was kind enough to provide us with a couple of Slinky springs to play with on National Slinky Day - we got the plastic Slinky spring, and the metal Slinky that I had when I was a kid. In my mind when I received these amazing toys of my childhood were thoughts of wonder, excitement, and dreams - dreams to make the Slinky walk down the longest flight of stairs in New York a la Ace Venture Pet Detective. Alas, with children, the thoughts in a mama’s head are usually just dreams, because kids keep ya busy! Thankfully, the Slinky is a toy that pretty much all ages can enjoy, so we had a BLAST just slinking it downstairs and down our own collection of makeshift stairs. 

The Slinky was created by mistake. A Mechanical Engineer named Richard James was working in his office with springs when a few springs fell off of a shelf. As the springs walked away down a flight of books, he came up with the idea of the slinky spring - a toy that has the possibility to keep kids engaged for a long time! The Slinky has withstood the sands of time in the toy world. For 75 years, the Slinky still graces the shelves of big box stores - it promotes sensory play and just all-around fun! My husband and I played with the Slinky for an hour last night — laughing and squealing after midnight! Our neighbors probably thought a chained man was on the loose as slinked our metal Slinky down the flight of stairs outside of their apartment door. It’s okay, they’re nice! 

Not only does the Slinky stand the test of time, but the Slinky Jingle is the most well-known jingle with over 70 years of being an earworm. The Slinky Jingle was written by Homer Fesperman and Charles Weagley in 1962, and it is the longest-running jingle in history! The Slinky never needs batteries or to be charged, immediately out of the box you can start playing! However, beware of the tangle! We had a designated Slinky “de-tangler” growing up, and it was good ole’ Mom! My mom has the touch to detangle unruly hair - that would be me - and our Slinky. Aren’t moms the best? Dads are awesome too!

Video and Toy Review: ZURU X-Shot Flying Bug Attack Toy Review

Summer isn’t over yet, and if you’re looking for the best outdoor toy, then look no further, because ZURU’s X-Shot has released the best launching toy ever! With 10 rounds of fast shooting action, blast your darts at the nuisance that is the flying bug that you propel from the base. Each set comes with two semi-automatic blaster guns, 24 projectiles or darts (you get extra because you will lose some!), three bugs, and the bug launcher. The launcher requires four AA batteries to get going. You will also need a screwdriver to open the battery compartment. Once you get going it is non-stop fun and action. This is not for little kids though as the blaster really does shoot far and hurts a bit, and it’s for ages eight and up. Our five year old had some trouble with progressing to the next round, but with some help, he blasted a balloon!

They really do not compare at all, because ZURU’s X-Shot seriously is so precise, and the launcher base included really does launch these bugs far! If you’re looking for a set for target practice, paint the tip of the projectile, ready, aim, and fire, and you’ll have your own make-shift, totally safe shooting range!

Video and Toy Review: Edna Mode - New Outfit, New Wave - First Look of Edna Mode Incredibles 2 Wave 2 Poseable Doll by Jakks Pacific

With the ever-present need for me to locate wave two Incredibles 2 toys, I bit the bullet and pre-ordered assortments from Entertainment Earth. Then it happened, yesterday there she was -- my favorite fashionista lying down sideways in her box. 

Outfitted with her new movie attire, Edna Mode stands 6" tall in doll form yet she surpasses the heights of the giants of the fashion industry. Her three-foot-tall stance tooled down to a playable size will allow five points of articulation and a closer, smoother haircut for wave two. I compared her to wave one Edna in her original Incredibles movie outfit (ninja sleeve, purple v-neck dress), and I found that I appreciated wave one more. 

Jakks Pacific is rolling out a collection of new wave two poseable action figures, poseable costumed dolls, and die-cast vehicles. Each one different in their own way, I will predict now how hard they will be to find considering Toys R Us is no longer around since TRU was my go-to source for all new toys. I am hoping and praying that the Gods of Jakks Pacific contacts me and says in unison, "Let's collaborate, oh awesome supporter of all products that are Jakks Pacific." And then I woke up. I love you, JAKKS! Love me back! Am I kidding? No. 

Keep checking Target to find Incredibles 2 Wave 2 dolls, figures, and other toys from this amazingly expansive and fun range of toys! Wave 2 Edna Mode was not on file, thus, I am not sure of her actual price, but they charged me $14.99, which seems fair because Wave One Edna Mode is $14.99.

Overall, she's an adorable doll, well detailed with fine features and delicate hands. However, I feel her new dress is way too short, and it is already fraying at the edges. Even though is right on trend for fall, even though we are still fighting the summer heat. I guess you can say, Edna Mode is rushing the season. Right, dahl-ings?

Toy Review: America's Landmark in Pieces - Skullduggery's Smithsonian Discover Puzzle Review

Puzzles for me have a special place in my heart. Puzzles are where I learned about the production of children's products, sales, marketing, and the creation of an idea becoming a tangible product. Puzzles in themselves are just that — puzzles, but when puzzles teach as well as provide a communal experience or even a solo experience, they become something much more. You put together a puzzle, you painstakingly search for each piece that fits just so within the next creating this image that a graphic designer put together only to be broken apart and placed inside of a box. It’s up to the puzzler to piece back together the artist’s vision, which makes it so special. 

I love puzzles! I find great poetry in puzzles, which is why I take the opportunity to do them with my son often. He is nearly five years old and is quite good at piecing puzzles together, which is also why I jumped at the opportunity to review the Smithsonian Discovery Puzzles by Skullduggery. We were sent a 100-piece puzzle featuring America’s Landmarks, and this opportunity to teach my son about his nation, each state, and their landmarks was such a valid lesson. Even though he forgot everything I told him, one fact resonated with him—that there is more out there than what’s in front of us, and that in itself makes him want to explore! 

The puzzle is colorful yet quite muted down, and not so bright and heavily saturated with neon colors - it’s just toned down and very respectful. You won’t find the state capitals on here, but if you’re working on this kind of puzzle with your child be sure to throw that in for some fun facts! Warning: You may get an, “oh yeah” response! I learned a few things from this puzzle, too, like I had no idea that there was a Space Camp in Mississippi! 

The puzzle is only 100 pieces, but it will take some time for your kiddo and you to put it together.  The pieces are large and sturdy, and can easily be placed within one another. You also get a fun fact sheet with the puzzle. Once you have completed your puzzle, be sure to snap a photo of your masterpiece and share it with Skullduggery on their social media! Links below! We started the puzzle on the floor before bed and then had to move it to the table so I could vacuum the next day.
